The annual Futures’ Game rosters have been announced and there are three Rays prospects who made the cut: Brent Honeywell, Diego Castillo, and Lucius Fox. Jared Sandberg, former Rays player and current Durham Bulls manager, will coach first base for Team USA during the game.
Honeywell was drafted 72nd overall during the 2014 draft without much fanfare, but when it was found out that he can toss a nasty screwball people took notice. Then those same people found that Honeywell is really, really good. He surged up the Rays prospect list and is now one of the top pitching prospects in all of baseball. He is currently pitching in the Durham Bulls rotation, but there’s a chance we could see him in September...or maybe even sooner.
Lucius Fox came to the Rays last year in the trade that sent Matt Moore to the San Francisco Giants. Fox signed with the Giants as an international free agent back in 2015 and made his pro debut during the 2016 season, but struggled out of the gate and after being dealt to the Rays, sat out the rest of the year to rest an injury. Now he is off to a solid start in 2017 with the Rays Single-A team.
