Rays prospects and minor leagues: Ramos makes debut

Wilson Ramos' long-awaited Rays organization debut came with Charlotte Monday

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

I was thinking of burying the Wilson Ramos lede and making the headline about Peter Bourjos, but Ramos suiting up for the first time is a very big deal.

In the second game of Charlotte's doubleheader, breakout second baseman left the game a couple innings after being hit by a pitch. I'm not sure if that's the reason for the departure, though.

Triple-A Durham Bulls (35-21)

In a battle of highly touted young pitchers, Blake Snell came out on top of Lucas Giolito in Durham's 6-1 win over Charlotte. After the teams traded runs in the second inning, both starters settled down. While Giolito bowed out after six innings, Snell went a career-long eight innings, striking out seven and giving up just five hits and three walks. When Giolito departed, the Bulls went to work and scored five over the next two innings. Willy Adames' two-out, two-run double in the seventh was the biggest hit.

SS Willy Adames: 1-for-3, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 2 BB, 2 K
OF Jake Bauers: 2-for-5, 3 K
1B Casey Gillaspie: 1-for-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 2 K
2B Kean Wong: 3-for-4, 2 RBI, 1 SB

LHP Blake Snell: 8 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 7 K

Double-A Montgomery Biscuits (32-25)

Mike Franco was sharp in Montgomery's 5-1 win over Jacksonville. In his third straight quality start, Franco struck out a career-high nine batters and allowed just a run in six innings of work. Cade Gotta's RBI double in the first gave the Biscuits a quick 1-0 lead, but Jacksonville tied the score in the fourth. In the sixth, Southern League Player of the Week Andrew Velazquez tripled in two runs and scored on a wild pitch. Justin Williams plated an insurance run in the eighth.

1B Joe McCarthy: 1-for-4, 2 K
OF Justin Williams: 2-for-4, 1 RBI
OF Cade Gotta: 1-for-2, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 2 BB, 1 K, 2 SB

RHP Mike Franco: 6 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 9 K

Class A-Advanced Charlotte Stone Crabs (27-28)

A trio of Rays rehabbed in Charlotte's 1-0 win over Clearwater in Game 1 of Monday's doubleheader. After Brad Boxberger struck out all three batters he faced, Eduar Lopez took the baton and continued shutting down the Threshers, striking out five in five scoreless innings. Wilson Ramos caught and went 0-for-1 with a walk in his Rays debut, and Peter Bourjos was 0-for-4 with a strikeout. Brett Sullivan's pinch-hit single in the seventh won the game.

It took 12 innings, but the Stone Crabs eventually prevailed by a 3-2 score in Game 2. After each team scored twice in the sixth, both offenses went cold and were unable to take advantage of their rare opportunities. However, in the 12th, it only took one swing of the bat to break the tie. Angel Moreno tripled to lead off the inning and came home to score on a throwing error. Starter Travis Ott was charged with a run in six-plus innings with six strikeouts. Brandon Lawson led the Charlotte bullpen with three scoreless innings of relief.
