Rays prospects and minor leagues: McCarthy’s surge continues

The Red Scare is tearing up Southern League pitching

Joe McCarthy is a key part of Montgomery’s offense
Jim Donten

Even before Monday’s game with three extra-base hits, Joe McCarthy was batting .321 with a .486 on-base percentage and .509 slugging percentage, and for the second straight month, he has more walks than strikeouts.

I’d imagine that some teams selling at the deadline have dispatched scouts to Montgomery to take a look at him.

Triple-A Durham Bulls (57-37)

Indianapolis took Michael Roth deep three times in Durham’s 5-2 loss Monday. In his second start with the Bulls, Roth allowed four of Indy’s runs in six innings, including a pair of solo home runs in the sixth a half inning after Durham tied the game at two. Johnny Field drove in both Bulls runs.

Double-A Montgomery Biscuits (13-11)

Montgomery went up late and held on for an 8-7 win over Jackson. After losing a 4-1 lead, the Biscuits went back up in the eighth on back-to-back RBI hits from Cade Gotta and Justin Williams. An inning later, Nick Ciuffo scored a key insurance run on an error. Starter Hunter Adkins allowed five runs in 4 13 innings. Joe McCarthy homered.

1B Joe McCarthy: 3-for-4, 3 R, 2 2B, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 BB
OF Justin Williams: 1-for-5, 1 RBI, 1 K

Class A-Advanced Charlotte Stone Crabs (11-11)

Charlotte’s offense was nowhere to be found in its 1-0 loss to Jupiter. The Stone Crabs had just three hits throughout the game and never had more than one runner on base at a time. Meanwhile, the Hammerheads started the game with a leadoff triple, and he scored the decisive run when the following batter singled. Brandon Lawson took the tough loss despite five solid innings of work.

OF Ryan Boldt: 0-for-3, 1 K
3B Kevin Padlo: 2-for-3
C David Rodriguez: 0-for-3, 1 K

RHP Brandon Lawson: 5 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Drew Smith: 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K

Class-A Bowling Green Hot Rods (15-10)

It only took one swing to sink Bowling Green in its 1-0 loss to Clinton. In the bottom of the eighth, Orlando Romero surrendered a home run to the first batter he faced. This wasted a strong start from Willy Ortiz, who struck out four in six scoreless frames. Over his last three starts, Ortiz has allowed just one run in 20 innings. All five Hot Rods hits were singles.

CF Josh Lowe: 1-for-4, 1 K
OF Jesus Sanchez: 1-for-4
3B Adrian Rondon: 0-for-3, 1 K

RHP Willy Ortiz: 6 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K

Short-Season Hudson Valley Renegades (10-16)

Vidal Brujan’s ninth-inning double lifted Hudson Valley to a 6-5 win over Vermont. An inning after he scored the tying run, Brujan took advantage of a two-out error that allowed Deion Tansel to reach. Earlier in the game, Tansel joined Jean Ramirez hitting back-to-back home runs. Starter Jhonleider Salinas walked five and allowed three runs in 4 2/3 innings. Brendan McKay was hitless again but did walk.

Rookie Princeton Rays (11-14)

Princeton hammered Bristol for seven runs in the seventh in an 11-3 win Monday. It broke the 3-3 tie with six walks, a hit batter, two wild pitches and just one hit, a two-run double by Justin Bridgman. In the inning, Princeton sent 11 batters to the plate. After starter Joel Peguero allowed three runs in four innings, Phoenix Sanders struck out three in three scoreless innings of relief.
