It was a busy day for Rays and Bulls pitchers working their way back

MLB: Tampa Bay Rays at Texas Rangers
Jose De Leon made his second appearance for the GCL Rays Monday
Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

Not only were Burch Smith, Jonny Venters, Jaime Schultz and Jose De Leon on the mound Monday, Rene Pinto was back in action for the GCL Rays. Bowling Green’s catcher had been out of action since June 11.

Triple-A Durham Bulls (62-39)

Durham scored five times in the first and rolled to a 12-3 win over Buffalo. Kean Wong led off the game with a double and scored on Jake Bauers’ hit. Patrick Leonard then drove in two with a single. In the third, Mike Marjama’s two-run homer broke the game open further. With the early run support, Yonny Chirinos had no trouble turning in another good outing with seven strikeouts and three runs allowed in 6 23 innings.

Class A-Advanced Charlotte Stone Crabs (15-15)

Charlotte threw three rehabbers at Palm Beach, but what it really needed was some offense in its 3-0 loss Monday. Burch Smith started and threw five scoreless innings, and he was followed by Jonny Venters, who threw a quick 1-2-3 sixth. Jaime Schultz followed with a scoreless seventh, but he was charged with two runs in the eighth. Ryan Boldt and Nathaniel Lowe combined for five of the Stone Crabs’ eight hits, all singles.

Bowling Green collapsed late in its 7-4 loss to Peoria. Home runs from Miles Mastrobuoni and Jesus Sanchez helped the Hot Rods to a 4-1 lead, but the bullpen couldn’t finish what Willy Ortiz started. After Ortiz departed having allowed a run in six innings, the Chiefs scored three in each of the final two innings against Jayson McKinley and Orlando Romero.

Short-Season Hudson Valley Renegades (15-18)

Mikey York struck out eight over six scoreless innings in Hudson Valley’s 5-3 win over Connecticut. York has been good all season, and it was his third straight scoreless outing with no walks. The Renegades scored all five of their runs in the fifth with two-RBI hits from both Vidal Brujan and Taylor Walls.

2B Vidal Brujan: 1-for-3, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 BB

Carl Chester walked twice and scored twice, and Bryce Brown and Kevin Santiago each drove in two runs. Starter Dylan Thompson only recorded two outs, but Kyle Goodbrand picked up his teammate with nice long relief work, striking out four in three hitless innings.

C Ronaldo Hernandez: 1-for-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 SB

Jose De Leon was sharp in his rehab appearance in the GCL Rays’ 9-1 win over the GCL Red Sox. For four innings, De Leon dominated his young opponents, striking out eight in four scoreless innings. In piggyback duty, Miguel Lara was just as good with eight strikeouts of his own in 3 13 frames. The outstanding pitching performance was aided by home runs from Rene Pinto and Pedro Diaz.
