Rays prospects and minor leagues: Charlotte hosts more rehabbers

Kevin Kiermaier and Daniel Robertson were in Charlotte’s lineup Thursday

MLB: Cincinnati Reds at Tampa Bay Rays Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Quite a few (perhaps rightly) soured on Ryan Boldt after his pro debut last season. The team’s second-round pick batted just .210 with a .273 on-base percentage and was even caught stealing more often than he was successful.

The 2017 season has been a different story. His average is .298, and his OBP is .370. He’s been particularly hot in July with a .418 OBP and .942 OPS. He hit his fourth homer of the season Thursday, and while the Rays would probably like to see a little more pop, he has a shot at 30-plus doubles this season with 21 to date.

Triple-A Durham Bulls (64-40)

Michael Roth had his best outing as a Bull in Durham’s 3-1 win over Buffalo. In six scoreless innings, he faced just two batters over the minimum and struck out two. Another recent addition, Chaz Roe, was effective in 1 23 innings before the Bisons got one off Ryan Garton in the ninth. Patrick Leonard’s eighth homer of the season accounted for all of Durham’s runs.

RHP Chaz Roe: 1 2/3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K

Double-A Montgomery Biscuits (20-13)

Montgomery scored five in the first and held on for a 6-3 win over Tennessee. All but one of the runs scored with two outs. Justin O’Conner drove in two with a single, and Andrew Velazquez’s double plated two more. While Smokies starter Trevor Clifton only lasted an inning, Biscuits starter Logan Darnell pitched well, striking out eight in seven innings.

Class A-Advanced Charlotte Stone Crabs (18-15)

With the help of a couple big leaguers, Charlotte cruised to a 7-1 win over Dunedin. Although second baseman Daniel Robertson and Kevin Kiermaier combined to go just 1-for-4, the Rays will be happy two players are closer to returning. Ryan Boldt homered in the first, and Travis Ott was great again with nine strikeouts in five scoreless innings.

RHP Reece Karalus: 4 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 K

Class-A Bowling Green Hot Rods (18-15)

Bowling Green fell behind early and couldn’t find enough offense in its Game 1, 2-1 loss to Great Lakes. The Loons scored in each of the first two innings, and the Hot Rods could only manage a run on Jonah Heim’s sacrifice fly in the fourth. Starter J.D. Busfield allowed two runs — one earned — in a six-inning complete game.

That Hot Rods offense didn’t fare well in its 1-0 loss in Game 2. Bowling Green was hitless with runners in scoring position and left six runners on base. Angel Yepez allowed a solo home run in two innings of work.

Short-Season Hudson Valley Renegades (16-20)

Resly Linares was sharp in Hudson Valley’s 2-0 win over Aberdeen in Game 1 of their doubleheader. The 19-year-old lefty struck out six and walked none in six two-hit innings. Brendan McKay’s bases-loaded walk provided the opening run, and Taylor Walls doubled in an insurance run.

The IronBirds turned the tables in Hudson Valley’s 3-0 loss in Game 2. The Renegades had more errors (four) than hits (two). All three Aberdeen runs were unearned.
