Rays prospects and minor leagues: Bulls lean on Adames, Chirinos in win

In a 1-0 win, two players for Durham stood out Friday

On the same day Baseball America affirmed his status as one of the league’s top prospects, Willy Adames hit his seventh home run to make the difference in another Durham win.

Triple-A Durham Bulls (54-33)

Willy Adames and Yonny Chirinos led Durham to a 1-0 win over Toledo Friday. Adames’ seventh homer of the season came in the first inning and was the only run the Bulls needed. On the mound, Chirinos delivered another great start with six strikeouts in eight scoreless innings. Ryne Stanek completed the shutout with a scoreless ninth.

Bowling Green used 15 hits to hammer Great Lakes by a 12-3 score. The Loons went up 1-0 in the top of the second, but the Hot Rods responded with the next seven runs to blow the game open. Jesus Sanchez paced the team with four runs batted in, and Michael Brosseau doubled twice and drove in three. Angel Yepez started and struck out six in 3 2/3 innings, and Kenny Rosenberg struck out eight and allowed two runs -- one earned -- in 5 1/3 frames.

Short-Season Hudson Valley Renegades (6-10)

It took 15 innings, but Hudson Valley finally fell to Vermont by a 1-0 score. Matt Vogel was an out away from getting out of a jam exacerbated by his own error, but a two-out single won the game for the Lake Monsters. Each team had 10 hits. Nicholas Padilla threw six scoreless innings, Drew Strotman had four, and Hunter Schryver tossed three.

Rookie Princeton Rays (5-11)

Unearned runs cost Princeton in its 6-2 loss to Bluefield. Princeton was down just 2-1 in the eighth, and a double play had them an out away from ending the inning. However, a Moises Gomez error kept the inning alive, allowed a run to score and led to three two-out hits. Gomez singled and scored in the ninth. Starter Riley O’Brien struck out four and allowed a run in 4 1/3 innings.

Starter Wilson Garcia allowed two runs — one earned -- in five innings, and he was followed by Jonny Venters continuing his rehab assignment. The veteran lefty struck out a batter in one inning. Kevin Padlo was 0-for-3 with a walk, and Luis Leon homered.
