Rays DOTF 8/1: Garrett Whitley’s homer caps off strong July

Garrett Whitley homers. Eduar Lopez and Willy Ortiz shine.

Garret Whitley continued his power breakout in July. Six of his nine homers this year were hit in July. Eduar Lopez (Port Charlotte) and Willy Ortiz (Bowling Green) had impressive starts.

Triple-A Durham Bulls (65-40)

The Durham Bulls had the day off.

Double-A Montgomery Biscuits (59-48)

The Montgomery Biscuits ninth inning rally fell short in a 7-6 loss to the Chattanooga Lookouts. Dalton Kelly led off the bottom of a second with a double ahead of RBI singles by Justin Williams and Nick Ciuffo to put the Biscuits up 2-1. After the Lookouts tied the game at two in the top of the fourth Justin O’Conner’s three run homer gave the Biscuits a 5-2 lead. The Lookouts answered with a four run sixth to take a 6-5 lead. The teams traded single runs in the ninth. The Biscuits left the tying run on third to end the game.

Class A-Advanced Port Charlotte Stone Crabs (51-54)

The Charlotte Stone Crabs swept a double header with walkoff wins over the Port St. Lucie Mets. In game one the Stone Crabs won 5-4 in comeback fashion. The Stone Crabs fell behind 4-1 after the top of the sixth. In the bottom of the inning Daniel Robertson hit a solo homer to bring the Stone Crabs within two. Brett Sullivan’s two run homer in the bottom of the eighth tied the game at four. Thomas Milone reached on a throwing error. After a sacrifice bunt put Milone at third with one out the Mets opted to intentionally walk Daniel Robertson and Brandon Lowe to load the bases. Brett Sullivan came through with a RBI single to win the game.

In game two the Stone Crabs walked off with a 1-0 victory in eight innings. Eduar Lopez had one of his most impressive starts of his minor league career. Lopez threw seven shutout innings while striking out seven and not issuing a walk. Thomas Milone led off the bottom of the eighth with a double. David Olmedo-Barrera’s single sent Milone to third. Once again the Mets opted to load the bases with an intentional walk. This time with zero outs. Afer a David Rodriguez line out to short, Lucius Fox came through with a single up the middle for the second walk off victory of the day.

Class A Bowling Green Hot Rods (53-51)

The Bowling Green Hot Rods sprinted out to a 8-1 victory over the South Bend Cubs. The bulk of the damage was done in a five run fourth inning. RBI singles by Michael Brosseau and Josh Lowe and a RBI double by Jonah Heim were the big hits. In the sixth inning Garrett Whitley added a two run homer to push the lead to 8-0. The Cubs scored one in the bottom of the ninth to avoid the shutout. Willy Ortiz continued his dominant July by throwing six scoreless innings.

Class A Short Season Hudson Valley Renegades (18-21)

The Hudson Valley Renegades game against the Staten Island Yankees was postponed.

Class A Short Season Princeton Rays (15-24)

The Princeton Rays fell 7-2 to the Bluefield Blue Jays. The Rays fell behind 7-0 after five. Devin Davis homered to lead off the seventh. Davis and Bryce Brown were the only batters to collect multiple hits.

Rookie DSL Rays 1 (15-30)

The DSL Rays 1 beat the DSL Athletics 4-3. The Athletics took a 3-0 lead through two innings. The Rays 1 scatted four runs over the next four innnigs to secure the 4-3 win. Jose Pereira’s two run double in the fourth was the big hit of the game.

Rookie DSL Rays 2 (27-19)

The DSL Rays 2 lost both games of a double header to the DSL Indians/Brewers. In game one the Rays 2 fell 3-2. The Rays 2 tied the game at two through three. Diego Infante’s RBI double plated the second run for the Rays 2 in the bottom of the third.

In game two the Rays 2 fell 2-1 in eight innings. The game was scoreless through the scheduled seven innings. After allowing two runs in the top of the eighth the Rays 2 rally came up one run short.
