Prior to going on the DL with arm fatigue, Blake Bivens had been pretty effective for Charlotte, posting a 3.72 ERA with 45 strikeouts in 48 1⁄3 innings. In May, he struck out 20 and walked seven in 22 1/3 innings.

Already up 2-1, the Biscuits scored three on RBI singles from Grant Kay and Justin WIlliams in the eighth, and those insurance runs proved to be crucial.

Starter Brandon Lawson was charged with five runs — four earned — in five-plus innings.

Willy Ortiz was at it again in Bowling Green’s 7-2 win over Lake County. Ortiz, who has been one of the organization’s best pitchers as of late, pitched his seventh straight start allowing two or fewer earned runs. He was charged with just a run in 5 2/3 innings. The Hot Rods were already leading 2-0 when RBI hits by Josh Lowe, Jesus Sanchez and Rene Pinto extended the lead to five in the fifth.

Bluefield went ahead again off Tyler Day in the sixth. Starter Riley O’Brien allowed five runs in 1 2⁄3 innings.

In the three-run eighth, Granden Goetzman drove in two on a double. The rehabbing Blake Bivens struck out four and allowed two runs — one earned — in three innings.
