Rays DOTF 8/18: Yarbrough shuts down Syracuse

Triple-A Durham Bulls (75-48)

The Bulls shut out the Syracuse Chiefs on the strength of 6 13 shut out innings from Ryan Yarbrough in their 6-0 win. The Bulls managed to push across four runs in the first inning, backed by a Jake Bauers RBI-single and a two-run single from Patrick Leonard. In the fifth inning, Willy Adames launched his ninth home run of the season, a two-run shot that stretched the Bulls’ lead to 6-0. Yarbrough gave the Rays 6 13 superb innings, not allowing a run or walk and striking out eight. Out of the bullpen, Andrew Kittredge and Diego Castillo combined for 2 2/3 innings without a run the close out the 6-0 win.

Double-A Montgomery Biscuits (68-54)

Genesis Cabrera struggled out of the gates and set the Biscuits back in their 12-4 loss to the Birmingham Barons. A combination of poor pitching and poor defense let the Barons get on top 7-1 through just four innings. The Barons kept hitting until the game was over, taking it 12-4. On the Biscuits' side, Dalton Kelly had two doubles in the loss. The Biscuits are 31-21 now in the second half

Advanced Class-A Port Charlotte Stone Crabs (61-60)

It was a long day for the Stone Crabs and it ended with a loss against the Jupiter Hammerheads. It took twelve innings to decide the game, with both teams’ bats staying quiet. Eduar Lopez got through seven innings yielding only an unearned run, but Port Charlotte could only muster up one run of support for him, and the game went into extras. It took until the twelfth, when Marlins prospect Zach Sullivan hit a walk-off single. The Crabs are now 30-22 in the second half.

Class-A Bowling Green Hot Rods (65-55)

The Hot Rods were clicking on all cylinders today, roundly beating the Lake County Captains 9-1. Luis Rengifo lead off the game with a solo home run and the Hot Rods were off and running. With a strong seven inning start for Chris Pike, the Hot Rods offense came up with eight more runs and three multi-run innings to back him up. The win continued Bowling Green's strong play in the second half, putting them at 34-19 since the break.

Short Season Hudson Valley Renegades (30-25)

In an extra innings affair with the Tri-City Valley Cats, the Hudson Valley Renegades came out on top 7-4 in eleven innings. After holding a 4-1 lead through six innings, Hudson Valley couldn't hold onto it after surrendering three runs in the eighth inning. With the game tied in the eleventh, Oscar Rojas came through with a go-ahead sacrifice fly, and Carl Chester added on two more runs with a double.

Rookie-Level Princeton Rays (20-33)

Princeton came back and walked off the Burlington Royals. 6-5. In a back-and-forth affair, the Royals lead 5-4 into the bottom of the ninth inning. With the game on the line, the Rays loaded the bases with one away. Trey Hair brought home the tying run with a sacrifice fly, and the winning run came home on a Moises Gomez single. The win snapped Princeton’s three game losing streak.

Rookie-Level GCL Rays (19-27)

The GCL Rays fell short against the GCL Twins, 5-4. After spotting the Twins four runs in the first inning, the Rays went to work to try and come back. A run in the first, second and fourth innings put the Rays within one, but the Twins put up another run to give themselves some space. The score would hold until the Rays got a run in the ninth, but the rally couldn’t sustain and the GCL Rays lost.

Rookie-Level DSL Rays1 (22-40)

In a rain shortened, the rays’ first DSL team fell to the DSL Athletics 8-2. The Rays struggled for three hits and two runs in the five innings, while giving up eight runs in the first four innings.
