Rays DOTF 8/24: Jake Bauers homers, Hudson Valley wins 13th in a row

Austin Franklin and Jake McGee post good starts.

Jake Bauers led offensive prospects with a massive homer and double. 2016 draftees Austin Franklin and Easton McGee had good starts. Hudson Valley won their thirteenth straight game.

Triple-A Durham Bulls (78-51)

The Durham Bulls fell 6-5 to the Gwinnett Braves in their first attempt to clinch the division title. Matt Andriese put together a solid rehab start after getting started with a liner off his backside off the bat of Ronald Acuna. The Durham offense got off to a fast start behind a leadoff double by Mallex Smith ahead of a RBI single by Willy Adames. Patrick Leonard’s two run bomb capped off a three run first. In the third inning Jake Bauers hit a massive solo homerun to extend the Bulls lead to 4-1. Chaz Roe came in with four outs remaining to hold a 4-1 lead with a runner on first. The game was tied by the end of the inning thanks to a relay throw by Adames to nail the go ahead run at home. Bauers leadoff double in the bottom of the eighth lead to a run on a Shane Peterson sacrifice fly to give the Bulls the 5-4 lead. Roe couldn’t hold the lead in the ninth allowed two more runs. The bottom of the ninth started out in promising fashion with a Johnny Field double and Jake Hager hit by pitch. Smith grounded out, Adames struck out, and Bauers flew out to end the rally.

Double-A Montgomery Biscuits (71-57)

The Montgomery Biscuits game back from a big early deficit to beat the Tennessee Smokes 8-7 on a walkoff. Through five innings the Biscuits were down 7-2. Joe McCarthy’s two RBI single in the eighth was the big blow that pulled the Biscuits within one at 7-6. Justin William’s RBI double tied the game in the bottom of the ninth. Williams scored on a RBI infield single by Andrew Velazquez.

The Charlotte Stone Crabs and St. Lucie Mets game was postponed due to rain.

Class A Bowling Green Hot Rods (67-59)

The Bowling Green Hot Rods offense was shutdown in a 11-1 loss to the Dayton Dragons. The Hot Rods scattered five hits and one walk over nine innings. Their lone run game off a Emilio Gustave RBI single in the fifth inning. Jim Haley’s double was the only extra base hit.

The Hudson Valley Renegades won their 13th straight in a 8-0 shutout of the Brooklyn Cyclones. Austin Franklin had another good start allowing only three hits and two walks in six scoreless innings while striking out five. The six run seventh inning put the game out of reach. Carl Chester and Isaac Benard doubles did most of the damage.

The Princeton Rays pummeled the Burlington Royals 12-1. The Rays put up 20 hits. Easton McGee posted a solid five inning scoreless start. Catcher Ronaldo Hernandez ended up a triple short of the cycle. Zach Rutherford and Billy King also picked up three hits a piece. Moises Gomez had four hits and four RBI.

Rookie DSL Rays 1 (23-45)

The DSL Rays 1 split a double header with the DSL Red Sox. In game one the Rays 1 won 1-0. Raider Brito’s RBI double in the top of the first was all the offense the Rays 1 needed.

The DSL Rays 1 lost 2-1 in walkoff fashion to the DSL Red Sox in game two. The Rays 1 went ahead 1-0 thanks to Raider Brito. He started off the fourth with a double. He stole third base and scored on a throwing error by the catcher. The Red Sox came back with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to complete the comeback.

Rookie DSL Rays 2 (39-28)

The DSL Rays 2 split a doubleheader witht he DSL Cubs 1. In game 1 the Rays 2 lost 7-3. The game was tied at three through two, but the Rays 2 weren’t able to put any more runs on the board.
