Rays Down on the Farm: Durham wins division, Padlo and Whitley go yard

The Bulls pulled out a late win with just one hit while Garrett Whitley and Kevin Padlo hit home runs.

Triple-A Durham Bulls (79-51)

The Bulls only needed one hit to topple the Gwinnett Braves, 3-2. The Bulls' pitched well, relying on another bullpen day led by 4 innings from Michael Roth. The bats struggled, mustering up just one single the first seven innings. In the bottom of the eighth, the Bulls were aided with five walks and a hit-by-pitch to score three runs, and the Bulls held on in the ninth for a 3-2 win. The Bulls now own a superb record of 79-51.

Double-A Montgomery Biscuits (72-57)

The Biscuits and Smokies dueled it out on extra innings, with the Biscuits coming out on top. In the fifth inning the Biscuits opened the scoring when Andrew Velasquez and Jake Cronenworth raked back-to-back RBI-doubles, giving Montgomery a 2-0 lead. In the sixth, however, the Smokies replied with a game-tying two-run home run from Jason Vosler and a go-ahead home run from Yasiel Balaguert. Montgomery came back in the ninth to tie the game up after Nathan Lukes sent an RBI sac-fly to left field, scoring Justin Williams. Lukes would walk-off the Biscuits later on in the 11th inning with an RBI-single.

Advanced Class-A Port Charlotte Stone Crabs (66-61)

Port Charlotte partook in double header duty today against the St. Lucie Mets. In the first seven inning game, the Stone Crabs mashed their way to a 10-3 win. Despite being tied into the fifth inning, the Crabs exploded for seven runs in the last two innings punctuated by a Kevin Padlo two-run home run in the sixth.

In game two, Charlotte shut down the Mets' offense in a 4-0 win. The Crabs took advantage of a wild pitch and error in the fourth inning to prop up four runs, which was more than enough support for starter Michael Velasquez. Velasquez tossed six innings without a run with five strikeouts. With the sweep of the double header, the Crabs are 35-24 in the second half.

Class-A Bowling Green Hot Rods (67-60)

It was a quiet day for the Hot Rod bats in a 4-1 loss to the Dayton Dragons. Putting together only four hits, Garrett Whitley's seventh inning home run was their lone rum for the game. The Hot Rids now sit at 36-24 in the second half and mired in a five game losing streak.

Short Season Hudson Valley Renegades (36-25)

The Renegades beat the Brooklyn Cyclones 5-2. Hudson Valley was strengthened by a three-run sixth inning, giving them a 3-1 lead at the time. They added insurance the final couple innings on the road to secure the 5-2 victory.

Rookie-Level Princeton Rays (25-35)

The Princeton Rays beat the Burlington Royals 3-2 on Thursday. With a 2-2 tie through seven innings, Rolando Hernandez drove in the go-ahead run with an RBI-single in the eighth inning. The Rays sealed the win to put their record at 25-35.

Rookie-Level GCL Rays (24-28)

The Gulf Coast Rays bounce back from a loss yesterday to continue their solid play in mid-August with a 6-4 win over the GCL Red Sox. The Rays burst out for five runs in the middling innings to set up a 5-3 lead through five innings. The Red Sox put up a run in the eight inning to decrease the deficit to one-run, but the Rays added an insurance run in the ninth inning. With the win, the GCL Rays have taken five of their last six contests.

Rookie-Level DSL Rays1 (23-44)

The Dominican Summer League Rays shut down the DSL Red Sox 1-0 in a seven inning matchup. Raider Brito brought home the only run in the first inning with a RBI-double, and the Rays were able to ride the Rafael Pensa (5 innings) and Luis Trinidad (2 innings) to a 1-0 win.

Rookie-Level DSL Rays2 (39-30)

The second Dominican Summer League Rays’ team couldn’t close out the win, falling to the DSL Cubs 5-4. The Rays got up 4-0 through the first four innings and pitcher Edisson Gonzalez provided five innings allowing one run and striking out eight batters. The bullpen struggled to hold the lead, giving up five runs in the back half of the game, including two in the eight to finally cough up the lead. Even with the loss, the DSL Rays2 sport a solid 39-30 record.
