Rays prospects and minor leagues: Honeywell stumbles in Durham loss

Durham didn’t have its finest game a day after clinching the division

Triple-A Durham Bulls (79-52)

A day after clinching the division, Durham took a night off in a 12-0 loss to Norfolk. Brent Honeywell recorded just one out and exited having allowed two runs on two hits and three walks. The bottom two hitters in the Bulls lineup — Kean Wong and Jake Hager — had five of the team’s eight hits.

Montgomery scored early and rolled to a 6-2 win over Tennessee. Smokies mistakes aided the Biscuits along the way. The first run scored in the first inning on a bases-loaded walk, and three of the four third-inning runs were unearned. Jose Mujica delivered another nice outing, allowing just a run in 6 23 innings with five strikeouts.

Class A-Advanced Charlotte Stone Crabs (35-25)

Charlotte had a rough time in a 14-2 loss to Fort Myers. Brock Burke was chased early and allowed six runs in the first, and Tyler Brashears did the same in the fourth inning. The Stone Crabs finally cut into the 14-run deficit with RBI singles from Angel Moreno and David Olmedo-Barrera in the eighth.

Jim Haley’s home run was not enough in Bowling Green’s 3-1 loss to West Michigan. Aside from Haley’s first homer of the season, the Hot Rods had just three hits, all of which were singles. Starter Adrian Navas allowed two runs in six innings.

Short-Season Hudson Valley Renegades (37-25)

Hudson Valley erased a four-run deficit to win its 14th straight game with a 10-8 decision over Connecticut. The Renegades broke out with four runs in both the seventh and eighth innings. Those innings included a pair of two-out RBI singles from Carl Chester. For the first time in the organization, Tobias Myers had a bit of a rough time, allowing five runs in five innings.

Princeton made a pair of comebacks before ultimately falling to Burlington by a 6-5 score. Princeton erased deficits of 2-0 and 4-2 and went ahead 5-4 in the sixth on Jose Tonton’s three-run homer, but a two-run home run off Cristopher Sanchez in the seventh put Burlington back in front.

Carlos Vargas homered and drove in three runs in the GCL Rays’ 8-0 win over the GCL Orioles. His two-run double highlighted the three-run first inning, and he homered along with Alexander Alvarez when the GCL Rays added five in the eighth. With the early run support, Wanderson Linares cruised to a nice outing with five scoreless innings.
