Rays DOTF 8/3: Jake Bauers hits opposite field homer

Jake Bauers and Carlos Vargas lead the way offensively on the farm.

Jake Bauers hit an opposite field homer for the Durham Bulls. Carlos Vargas, acquired in the Drew Smyly trade, homered as part of a three hit game for the GCL Rays.

Triple-A Durham Bulls (68-41)

The Durham Bulls beat the Charlotte Knights 4-1. Jake Bauers put the Bulls up 1-0 in the bottom of the first with his tenth homer of the year. Bauers homer was a majestic opposite field shot. In the bottom of the fifth Kean Wong lined a three run homer to put the Bulls up 4-0. Daniel Robertson followed with a double. In Robertson’s first rehab appearance since being moved to AAA ended the night with two hits. Michael Roth had a strong six scoreless inning start. Hunter Wood, Jose Alvarado, and Chaz Roe closed out the victory.

Double-A Montgomery Biscuits (60-49)

The Montgomery Biscuits fell to the Chattanooga Lookouts 5-2. The Biscuits fell behind 3-0 midway through two before answering for a run. The run came from the two Biscuits making their AA debut. Brett Sullivan hit a double and was driven in by a RBI single by Brandon Lowe. The Montgomery offense went quiet until the bottom of the eighth. They combined singles by Sullivan, Michael Russell, and Jake Cronenworth to score their second run of the game.

The Charlotte Stone Crabs enjoyed a scheduled off day.

Class A Bowling Green Hot Rods (53-51)

The Bowling Green Hot Rods were shutdown in an 8-0 loss to the Lansing Lugnuts. JD Busfield had a disappointing start. He allowed seven runs, four earned, in five innings. Peter Bayer threw three hitless innings in relief. The Hot Rods weren’t able to put together much offense. Josh Lowe had two hits. Rene Pinto’s double was the only extra base hit. It was Pinto’s first game back in Bowling Green since going on the DL and spending some rehab time in the GCL.

The Hudson Valley Renegades game against the Lowell Spinners was postponed due to rain.

The Princeton Rays had a scheduled off day.

Rookie DSL Rays 1 (17-30)

The DSL Rays 1 and the DSL Astros Blue played two seven inning games. In game one The Rays 1 won 4-0. Raider Briton put the Rays 1 on the board in the top of the 1st with a RBI groundout. In the top of the fourth Angel Nelo hit a RBI single followed by a RBI double by Amador Arias. In the seventh inning the Rays 1 combined a single and three walks to score their final run. Aldor Rodriguez held the Blue hitless through five innings, but did walk four.

In game two the Rays 1 fell 8-1. The Blue raced out to a 4-0 lead midway through the first. The Rays 1 responded with their lone run in the bottom of the first. Yunior Martinez led off with a double. Martinez scored when Amador Arias was caught stealing second base.

Rookie DSL Rays 2 (29-19)

The DSL Rays 2 defeated the DSL Astros Orange 3-1. The Orange went out in front with a run in the second inning. The Rays 2 tied the game on a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth. The Rays 2 added two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Aldenis Sanchez drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly. Angle Lopez followed with a RBI double.

Rookie GCL Rays (13-19)

The GCL Rays fell to the GCL Twins 9-4. The Rays scored runs in each of the first three innings, but ended three tied 4-4. A five run fourth inning for the Twins capped off the scoring for both teams. Carlos Vargas hit a two run homer in the bottom of the third.
