The Rays have placed Alex Cobb on the 10 day disabled list, with “turf toe”, an ailment the medical website WebMD describes as a sprain of the ligaments around the big toe. While often associated with football players, turf toe can afflict any athlete who jams or pushes off from the toe repeatedly.
It is Cobb’s right toe that is affected, so this is not high-leg-kick related.
The DL assignment is retroactive to August 6. If all goes according to plan, Cobb will most likely miss a single start.
Taking his place in the rotation this Thursday will be recently demoted Blake Snell. Snell’s struggles with the Rays have been often noted. He has not pitched for the Bulls since his August 4th demotion.
