The Rays had to have their current series with the New York Yankees moved to Citi Field due to Hurricane Irma’s impact on the region. Despite the numerous number of hurricanes and tropical storms that have hit the area in years past, Irma was the first storm that actually caused the Rays to relocate a series. Previously, they have had games postponed and also cancelled due to storms.
It was 4th time in franchise history that the Rays played in a series as the home team, despite being away from Tropicana Field. The other times came during their two games in Japan against the New York Yankees in 2004, and then the two series in at the Disney’s Wide World of Sports complex in 2007 and 2008.
The Rays will welcome in the American League East leading Boston Red Sox for a three-game series. The Rays will be off on Thursday as they return to the Tampa Bay area for the first time since Irma made her landfall this past weekend.
While the official Rays account has not yet released a statement, they have been tweeting about Friday’s food drive and agreeing with fan excitement over the series, so it’s safe to say this news is official.
