Rays prospects and winter leagues: Gomez’s breakout year continues

After a strong 2018 season, Moises Gomez is still swinging a good bat in Venezuela.

MLB: Colorado Rockies at Los Angeles Dodgers Richard Mackson-USA TODAY Sports

Moises Gomez, Dalton Moats, and David Rodriguez were among the players who have stood out in recent offseason action.

Hitters

2B Jonathan Aranda, Liga Mexicana del Pacífico

This week: 0 AB
Offseason: 2 AB, .000 BA/.000 OBP/.000 SLG

It looks like at-bats aren’t going to be frequent for Aranda, at least early in the season.

OF Ryan Boldt, Arizona Fall League

This week: 3 AB, 1 K
Offseason: 18 AB, .278 BA/.350 OBP/.278 SLG

Playing time has been sporadic for Boldt.

2B Vidal Brujan, Liga de Béisbol Profesional de la República Dominicana

This week: 4 AB, 1 K
Offseason: 13 AB, .077 BA/.077 OBP/.077 SLG

If Brujan is only going to play once a week, he probably wishes every game would go as long as Game 3 of the World Series, like his first one did.

SS Lucius Fox, AFL

This week: 16 AB, 1 R, 3 H, 3 RBI, 3 BB, 3 K
Offseason: 50 AB, .340 BA/.459 OBP/.400 SLG

Pitchers finally found a way to get Fox out in the AFL, but he’s still getting on base in nearly every game he’s played.

OF Moises Gomez, Venezolana de Béisbol Profesional

This week: 14 AB, 4 R, 6 H, 3 HR, 5 RBI, 4 K
Offseason: 16 AB, .375 BA/.353 OBP/.938 SLG

It was a busy week for Gomez, who was named the No. 10 prospect in the organization by Baseball America. He had a two-homer game on Thursday.

OF Emilio Gustave, LIDOM

This week: 1 AB, 1 H
Offseason: 1 AB, 1.000 BA/1.000 OBP/1.000 SLG

Gustave is the only Ray to debut this week. I wouldn’t expect him to play a lot.

OF Joe McCarthy, AFL

This week: 14 AB, 3 H, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 6 K
Offseason: 31 AB, .258 BA/.410 OBP/.323 SLG

Kiley McDaniel answered a question regarding Joe McCarthy and the Rule 5 draft in a chat last week.

C Rene Pinto, LVBP

This week: 13 AB, 2 R, 3 H, 1 2B, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Offseason: 34 AB, .147 BA/.194 OBP/.265 SLG

Except for a brief stay in Princeton in 2016, Pinto doesn’t homer much, but he did in Venezuela last week.

C David Rodriguez, LVBP

This week: 14 AB, 3 R, 4 H, 1 2B, 4 RBI, 5 K
Offseason: 28 AB, .357 BA/.357 OBP/.536 SLG

Rodriguez has swung a pretty hot bat so far this month and is currently riding a four-game hitting streak.

OF Jesus Sanchez, LIDOM

This week: 3 AB, 1 K
Offseason: 15 AB, .200 BA/.294 OBP/.267 SLG

Like Brujan, Sanchez hasn’t seen much action other than the one lengthy game they each played in.

Pitchers

LHP Kyle Bird, LMP

This week: 4 IP, 3 H, 1 BB, 3 K
Offseason: 8 IP, 0.00 ERA, 0.75 WHIP

Bird pitched well this season, and that has continued this month.

RHP Yoel Espinal, LIDOM

This week: 0 IP
Offseason: 0 IP, *.** ERA, *.** WHIP

Espinal needs a chance to get back out there to lower his ERA.

LHP Matt Krook, AFL

This week: 2 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
Offseason: 7 23 IP, 9.39 ERA, 1.70 WHIP

Krook made another start for Peoria.

RHP Brandon Lawson, AFL

This week: 4 13 IP, 7 H, 6 ER, 1 BB, 5 K
Offseason: 8 23 IP, 9.35 ERA, 1.96 WHIP

Lawson has been charged with a run in every appearance with Peoria so far.

LHP Resly Linares, LIDOM

This week: 2 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
Offseason: 4 IP, 2.25 ERA, 1.25 WHIP

All four of Linares’ appearances this offseason have been in relief.

LHP Dalton Moats, AFL

This week: 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K
Offseason: 6 13 IP, 0.00 ERA, 0.16 WHIP

The rest of the Rays’ pitchers have struggled in Arizona so far, but Moats has been very effective.

LHP Luis Moncada, LVBP

This week: 1 23 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Offseason: 3 13 IP, 0.00 ERA, 0.30 WHIP

RHP Angel Rodriguez, LVBP

This week: 0 IP
Offseason: 1 13 IP, 0.00 ERA, 1.50 WHIP

RHP Jhonleider Salinas, LVBP

This week: 2 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K
Offseason: 4 IP, 2.25 ERA, 1.00 WHIP

RHP Phoenix Sanders, AFL

This week: 2 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
Offseason: 6 23 IP, 12.15 ERA, 2.85 WHIP

All stats are through games of Oct. 27.
