The Rays are wearing this shirt ahead of tonight’s game against the Astros, where Blake Snell will receive his Cy Young award before the game.
You can get your own shirt below!
Blake Snell pitched his way to an historic and well deserved Cy Young award this year, and our friends at BreakingT are celebrating with this incredible shirt honoring his nickname, “Zilla.”
There is no better way than to commemorate the King of the Monsters than designing his very own trophy, adapted to suit his nickname.
And although we cannot have the trophy itself, we can certainly rep the Cy Zilla version any day of the week.
Alright, alright! You can click the handy link here to get your claws on this amazing shirt.
Wearing this t-shirt comes with no guarantee of making you an enormous, violent, prehistoric sea monster awakened and empowered by nuclear radiation with a nasty southpaw, but it might!
Speaking of Zilla, TIL that the OG (Original Godzilla) had “a distinctive disyllabic roar (transcribed in several comics as Skreeeonk!),” which is a phenomenal onomatopoeia. Perhaps we should start using it!
What, not as cool as the shirt?
I also learned the roar was created by composer Akira Ifukube, who produced the sound by rubbing a pine tar and “a resin-coated glove along the string of a contrabass.” Why, those are all baseball things! Especially how we know Snell is also an accomplished B.A.S.E. player. Get it? Bass? Base?
At least the nickname is perfect, even if my sound effect justification is not.
