The Rays are inviting 65 players to spring training, with two days left until workouts begin for pitchers and catchers. You can find the full list of uniformed members at the end of the article.
In addition to the numbers released, Tom Foley retains his No. 6 uniform, as he will continue as a roving instructor throughout the Spring.
Numbers not being worn include 1 (formerly Tim Beckham), 3 (Evan Longoria), and 8 or 9 (perhaps Jake Bauers can wear one of these if he makes the roster out of Spring... more on that below).
Retired Rays jersey numbers are No. 12 (Wade Boggs) and No. 66 (Don Zimmer).
Notable prospect jersey numbers
Brent Honeywell - 59
Honeywell picks up the No. 59 this season from relief flamethrower Ryne Stanek, who switches to his college No. 55 for 2018. This number for Honeywell has an interesting history of being worn by players either transitioning to their preferred number (Curt Casali, Jose Lobaton, Jose Bautista, Jorge Cantu) but more recently it was a parade of relievers trying to find their way (Ryne Stanek, Justin Marks, Eddie Gamboa, Andrew Bellatti, Everett Teaford). Honeywell will be sure to give the number some stability, if he keeps it. Given his swagger, he could also opt for the No. 1 and no one would complain. Honeywell wore the No. 21 in Triple-A last season.
Willy Adames - 27
The Rays’ top position prospect will enter camp wearing Mike Trout’s famed No. 27, which has not been worn since Mikie Mahtook graced the Rays bench. Rays outfielder Desmond Jennings wore the No. 27 in his introductory year in 2010 before changing to the No. 8. Adames also wore the No. 27 in Triple-A last season.
Christian Arroyo - 21
Arroyo, who wore the No. 22 in his promotion to the Giants roster in 2017, will adjust one digit lower to the number most recently worn by Lucas Duda, who the Rays acquired mid-season from the Mets in their playoff push. Duda is now a free agent.
Jake Bauers - 70
Bauers is as likely to join the Rays in 2018 as the four players listed above; however, he has not chosen what appears to be a “major league number,” instead opting for his number from last Spring. He has typically worn the No. 21 in the minors, but changed to the No. 11, the same number that is in his twitter handle, in Triple-A. That number is currently worn by starting shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria, who is in the last year of his contract with the Rays.
