DOTF 4/9: Brendan McKay makes first start of season

McKay sharp, Bulls walk their way to a victory

NCAA Baseball: College World Series-Louisville vs Texas A&M Steven Branscombe-USA TODAY Sports

Brendan McKay was sharp in his first start for the Bowling Green Hot Rods. Offensively there wasn’t a lot of offense on the day, but a four walk inning by the Durham Bulls prevented the Tampa Bay Rays minor league affiliates from a winless day.

Triple-A Durham Bulls (2-2)

The Durham Bulls rallied in the late innings for a 4-2 victory over the Gwinnett Stripes. Vidal Nuno put together a solid start allowing a solo homer as his only hit in 4.2 innings. After falling behind 2-0 in the seventh inning the Bulls rallied in the bottom of the frame. Brandon Snyder led off with a double and moved to third on a wild pitch. Keon Wong drove him in with a sacrifice fly. In the eighth inning Stripes pitcher Evan Phillips had trouble finding the zone as he started the inning walking Jake Bauers, Willy Adames, and Christian Arroyo. Bauers was caught stealing. Jason Coats singled to load the bases with one out down a run. Justin Williams followed with an RBI single to tie the game and leave the bases loaded. After a Snyder strikeout Wong walked to force in the go ahead run. Coats scored on a wild pitch to put the Bulls up 4-2. Hunter Wood entered to pick up the save. He struck out the first two he faced before inducing a groundball to first to end the game.

Josh Lowe continued his hot start to the season with a single, hit by pitch, and his third stolen base in three plate appearances. David Olmedo-Barrera tied the game in the top of the sixth with a solo homer. Unfortunately the Tortugas scored a run in the bottom of the frame for the walk off victory.

The Hot Rods picked up 10 hits (all singles), but struck out 11 times.
