I’ll be the first to admit that when the Rays acquired Denard Span as a part of the Evan Longoria trade this past offseason, I wasn’t enthused about the idea. At 34 years old, with flecks of white in his beard, Span was hardly the model of an ideal ballplayer at first glance. I can’t imagine I was the only one who thought, “This is going to go badly.”
I will now, in retrospect, be the first to admit how very, very wrong I was about Span. There were few players on the 2018 roster with so much heart and hustle, and who demonstrated as much drive and determination in their at-bats.
During his time with the Rays, however brief, Span hit .238/.364/.385, with four home runs and an impressive six stolen bases, demonstrating a speed many didn’t expect he had in him.
So yeah, I was wrong about Denard Span, and I don’t mind saying so. We’ve all made mistakes for better or for worse. Some guys we get hyped on way too early and they let us down, while others we assume will be duds and only manage to surprise us. This week, we want you to tell us which Rays player surprised you most: for better or worse?
Head over to the FanPosts section, select “New FanPost” on the left, then tell us all about which player you were most mistaken about.
