Gerrit Cole Scouting Report

The Rays faced Cole on the 18th and made their three hits on the night count as they drew a total of five walks off Cole, scoring four runs, but he would still complete seven innings against them. His latest start came on the 24th against the Royals where allowed a run on two hits , while he walked three and struck out eight over five innings of work.

His pitch usage, per Brooks Baseball

In 2018, he has relied primarily on his Fourseam Fastball (97mph) and Slider (89mph), also mixing in a Curve (83mph). He also rarely throws a Sinker (97mph) and Change (89mph).

His fourseam fastball generates an extremely high number of swings & misses compared to other pitchers’ fourseamers, is blazing fast, results in more flyballs compared to other pitchers’ fourseamers and has slight armside run. His slider is thrown extremely hard. His curve is a real worm killer that generates an extreme number of groundballs compared to other pitchers’ curves, generates more whiffs/swing compared to other pitchers’ curves, is much harder than usual, has a sharp downward bite and has slight glove-side movement. His sinker is blazing fast, has little sinking action compared to a true sinker and has slight armside run. His change is thrown extremely hard, results in more flyballs compared to other pitchers’ changeups and has slight armside fade.
