DOTF 7/11: Kean Wong named International League Top Star, Nathaniel Lowe hits 18th homerun

Kean Wong picks up three hits (two doubles) and drives in two in the AAA All-Star Game.

Kean Wong is named the International League Top Star with a three hit game including two doubles. Nathaniel Lowe (Montgomery) hit his 18th homer of the year and 8th for the Biscuits in 127 plate appearances.

Triple-A Durham Bulls (51-37)

The Durham Bulls are on their all-star break. Kean Wong, Justin Williams, and Ian Gibaut represented the Bulls on the International League team. Wong was named the International League Top Star, a nice encore for the 2017 AAA National Championship MVP.

The Montgomery Biscuits lost to the Tennessee Smokies 4-2. Trent Giambrone and Zack Short hit back-to-back solo homers in the bottom of the first put the Biscuits behind 2-0. In the third inning Jake Cronenworth cut the deficit to one with a RBI single. The Smokies scored two in the eighth to extend the lead to 4-1. Nathaniel Lowe hit a homer in the ninth, but the Biscuits fell short.

The Bowling Green Hot Rods fell to the Kane County Cougars 9-2. Trey Hair’s solo homer to lead off the bottom of the second and Moises Gomez’s RBI groundout in the sixth was all the offense the Hot Rods could muster. Vidal Brujan and Carl Chester finished with two hits a piece.

Rookie Hudson Valley Renegades (15-10)

The Hudson Valley Renegades fell to the West Virginia Black Bears 7-5. A three run homer off the bat of Adrian Rondon gave the Renegades a quick 3-0 lead. Michael Smith’s solo homer in the fifth extended the Renegades lead to 4-0 through five. A five run eighth inning rally by the Black Bears gave them a 6-4 lead. Jacson McGowan’s RBI single in the bottom of the eighth capped the scoring for the evening for the Renegades offense.

The Princeton Rays defeated the Bluefield Blue Jays 7-5. Through seven the score was tied at four. The Blue Jays took a 5-4 lead in the top of the eighth, but the Rays offense answered with a three spot in the bottom of the frame for the win. Wander Franco, Jake Palomaki, and Grant Witherspoon collected two hits a piece.

GCL Rays (9-11)

The GCL Rays fell to the GCL Twins 7-6. Brendan McKay opened in his first rehab start. He threw two innings and allowed one run on two hits and one walk while striking out two. Diego Infante’s RBI single in the first put the Rays up 1-0. In the third Infante added another RBI single and came around to score on KV Edward’s RBI double to give the Rays a 3-0 lead. McKay walked the leadoff hitter in the third inning before being pulled in the game. Two runs came around to score to cut the lead to 3-2. A five run sixth inning for the Twins proved too large a deficit for the Rays offense. The Rays scored three runs in the ninth. Infante contributed his third RBI single of the game and fifth hit of the game.

The DSL Rays 1 dropped the first game of their double header against the DSL Red Sox 1, 2-1. The Red Sox 1 scored two in the first. The Rays 1 put one on the board in the fifth, but fell short in the seven inning affair.
