Rays prospects and minor leagues: McKay dominates GCL hitters

If results against overmatched teenagers are any indication, Brendan McKay is ready to return to the Florida State League.

In 49 games with Double-A Montgomery, Jermaine Palacios hit .189 with a .502 OPS. The Rays sent him back to the Florida State League, where he finished last season while still with Minnesota. In 31 games with Charlotte, he’s batting .303 with a .770 OPS. Compared to last season with Fort Myers, his OPS is up 108 points, and his walk and strikeout rates have both improved. He turns 22 on Thursday.

Triple-A Durham Bulls (54-40)

Syracuse scored six runs against Jake Faria in Durham’s 11-5 loss. After the Bulls scored three in the top of the first, the Chiefs responded with two in the bottom half of the inning and four in the second. However, only three of the runs were earned due to errors by Brandon Snyder and Willy Adames. Syracuse added five runs in the fifth off Chih-Wei Hu.

Charlotte scored nine unanswered runs in a 9-3 win over Tampa. After falling behind 3-0 through 1 12 innings, Kevin Padlo hit a sacrifice fly, and Miles Mastrobuoni hit a two-run triple in the bottom of the second. Jesus Sanchez’s RBI triple in the fifth put the Stone Crabs ahead for the first time and started the second of three three-run innings. Willy Ortiz allowed three runs in 4 13 innings, and Ivan Pelaez struck out four in 3 23 scoreless innings.

Hudson Valley earned a rain-shortened, 6-0 win over Connecticut. After striking out nine and walking none in his last outing, starter Paul Campbell was sharp again, striking out six and again walking none in six scoreless innings. Trey Cumbie pitched the final 1 13 innings before the game was called. Chris Betts’ three-run homer capped a four-run third, and Jake Stone’s solo home run an inning later added insurance.

The GCL Rays squandered a late lead in a 4-3 loss to the GCL Red Sox. In the seventh, Kaleo Johnson’s two-run homer put the GCL Rays ahead, and Nick Schnell doubled and later scored an insurance run. But in the ninth, Jhoanbert Cedeno and Chandler Raiden combined to record just one out, and the GCL Red Sox won on a walk-off walk. Continuing his rehab appearance, Brendan McKay struck out seven in four perfect innings.
