The Rays trade Joe McCarthy, Brock Burke, and Ryan Yarbrough to the Cardinals for Jose Martinez and Luke Weaver
This is a trade that’ll benefit both teams trying to field a competitive team now. The Cardinals could use a few left-handed bats, and the Rays have plenty in their system. McCarthy, even though he is hitting very well in the minors, is blocked in Tampa by surplus of left handed position players in the minors. He could give the Cardinals more versatility in their lineup right away.
The Cardinals also lack lefties in their rotation, so Yarbrough makes a lot of sense here. The recent acquisition of Jalen Beeks makes a Yarbrough-Weaver swap seem enticing for both teams.
Martinez is a horrid defender and does not fit well in the NL, especially with Harrison Bader and Tyler O’Neil now on the team. Not yet arbitration eligible, he could alternate with CJ Cron as a DH/1B while Bauers got more time in LF.
The Rays trade Sergio Romo to the Pirates for Jordan Luplow
Jordan Luplow is a 24 year old outfielder that’s blocked by the crowded Pirates outfield. He posted a .869 OPS in 77 games at AAA this year and is rated as the 22nd best prospect in the Pirates system according to MLB.com. If the Rays trade Gomez in the next few days, Luplow could take his spot to get an extended look, with the hopes of developing into a solid, controlled outfielder.
Romo has been one of the best relievers the past two months and would be a great addition for a team that now has a shot at a wildcard spot (not to mention he already looks like a pirate). If the Rays could land Luplow for him, I believe it would be a great trade.
Adeiny Hechavarria to the Brewers for a PTBNL, Carlos Gomez to the Indians for a PTBNL
Just moves to lower the team salary and make room for prospects. This would allow for the Rays to call up Brandon Lowe and the newly acquired Jordan Luplow.
