DOTF 8/20: Wander Franco hits game winning homer. Matthew Liberatore with another dominant start.

Wander Franco hit his 10th homer of the season. Matthew Liberatore lowered his ERA to 0.98.

Wander Franco continued tearing up the Appalachian League with his 10th homer of the season as part of a three hit day and was intentionally walked for the Princeton Rays.

First round pick Matthew Liberatore threw five scoreless inning for the GCL Rays and set a career high with eight strikeouts and walked none.

Triple-A Durham Bulls (67-52)

The Durham Bulls had a scheduled off day.

Double-A Montgomery Biscuits (70-57)

The Montgomery Biscuits fell to the Chattanooga Lookouts 6-2. Michael Russell hit a homer. Jake Cronenworth, Brett Sullivan, and Miles Mastrobuoni collected two hits a piece.

The Bowling Green Hot Rods defeated the Dayton Dragons 5-2. After falling behind 2-0 in the third, Ronaldo Hernandez’s three-run homer put the Hot Rods up for good. It was Hernandez’s 19th homerun of the season and added his 20th double of the season. Taylor Walls collected three hits and stole his 28th base.

Rookie Hudson Valley Renegades (35-26)

The Hudson Valley Renegades rallied for a 3-1 victory over the Connecticut Tigers. The Tigers got on the board first in the sixth inning off starter Michael Mercado. The Renegades answered with two runs in the seventh and added an insurance run in the ninth. Tanner Dodson got on base five times with three singles and two walks. Ford Proctor’s double was the only extra base hit.

Rookie Princeton Rays (37-20)

The Princeton Rays defeated the Bluefield Blue Jays 8-7. Each team got most of their runs in one inning trading five run frames. With the game tied at seven in the bottom of the eighth Wander Franco hit a homer that would hold on to be the game winning run. Franco ended the night with three hits and was intentionally walked.

Prospect Note: Wander Franco’s 17 year old season has been truly remarkable.

This was before last night’s game where Franco hit his 10th homer. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. spent the whole season in the Appalachian League and received 276 plate appearances. Franco currently sits at 236 plate appearances.
