Rays walkup bracket: Semifinals

Could we get an all-Zeppelin final? (I kind of hope not)

The Rays may have sealed their fate for 2018 with a weekend sweep at the hands of the lowly Chicago White Sox, but there is still plenty to look towards for the rest of the season:

Tyler Glasnow’s hopeful stretching from Opener to legitimate starter; Jake Bauers and Willy Adames going from The Future to The Present; No one ever sliding into a base headfirst ever again (hopefully).

But most of all, we still have two more rounds of the Rays walk-up bracket!

We finished up our quarterfinals voting a week ago, and I have to say I’m quite pleased with how things have shaken out. Not only are our Final Four all excellent candidates, we even had the tightest matchup so far, a one-vote squeaker that was decided in the 11th hour.

Let’s recap the last round:

Quarterfinals Recap

Joey Wendle: Whole Lotta Love - Led Zeppelin 76%

over Ryan Yarbrough: Ladies and Gentlemen - Saliva 24%

Phew. “Ladies and Gentlemen” was the only song I was actively rooting against in the quarterfinals, and Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, and co. dispatched it with ease.

Ryne Stanek: Still Dre - Dr. Dre 62%

over C.J. Cron: That’s What I Like - Bruno Mars 38%

Jake Faria: Immigrant Song - Led Zeppelin 62%

over Carlos Gomez: Spongebob Squarepants Theme - Painty the Pirate and Kids 38%

These next two matchups were close, but never really in doubt, as “Still Dre” and “Immigrant Song” looked like Final Four locks from the beginning of the tournament, and they lived up to the hype.

I do have to say, I’m sad to see Gomez’s Spongebob selection knocked out. That was the sentimental favorite, for sure.

The biggest question now is: Do we get an all-Zeppelin final?

Andrew Kittredge: Tom Sawyer - Rush 51%

over Wilson Ramos: Wilson - Phish 49%

This was the one. The tightest matchup in the two-year run of the walkup music bracket history. It literally was tied 50-50 with one day remaining in the vote, before someone (presumably Getti Lee) cast the deciding vote right under the wire. I’ve been pulling for “Tom Sawyer” all tournament, but it’s going to have a hell of a test here in the semifinals.

Semifinal Matchups

Joey Wendle: Whole Lotta Love - Led Zeppelin

Ryne Stanek: Still Dre - Dr. Dre

If we’re going to avoid an all-Zeppelin final — which while it would be kind of funnny, would also be kind of boring — this is the better chance of the two, I believe. Anyone who isn’t a fan of classic rock (though the classic rock/baseball fan Venn diagram certainly has plenty of overlap) should be skewed towards “Still Dre,” and while there are certainly classic rock fans below the age of 35, anyone in that younger age bracket has a certain love for “Still Dre” that should top their Zeppelin love. Plus, knowing that another Zeppelin song may well still make the final from the other half of the bracket may skew some towards Snoop and Dre.

When I set my fake Vegas lines for the remaining eight songs last round, I had “Immigrant Song” as the second favorite, but after rethinking, I actually think it’s the top dog. “Tom Sawyer” has snuck through on some close calls, but “Immigrant Song” has been a juggernaut. Plus, it’s just such a good song for short burst joy. That’s why it was perfect in the Thor: Ragnarok trailer, and it’s why it’s a near-perfect walkup choice. Plus, having “Tom Sawyer” denote the entrance of Andrew Kittredge likely steals a little bit of its shine…
