New, comments

Nathaniel Lowe was promoted to AAA Wednesday afternoon.

MLB: Washington Nationals at Pittsburgh Pirates Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Nathaniel Lowe was promoted to AAA Durham and made an impact in his debut with three hits including a double in his first plate appearances and was hit by a pitch. Austin Meadows hit his first homer in the Rays organization since being acquired from Pittsburgh in the Chris Archer trade.

Triple-A Durham Bulls (63-49)

The Durham Bulls crushed the Columbus Clippers 17-2. After waiting through a rain delay the Bulls offense got off to a quick start with seven runs in the first two innings and then dropping an eight spot in the fourth to take a 15-1 lead. Austin Meadows led the way with three extra base hits, two doubles and a homer, while driving in three. In his AAA debut Nathaniel Lowe went three-for-five with a double and a hit by pitch. Kean Wong and Andrew Velazquez collected three hits a piece for the Bulls.

Double-A Montgomery Biscuits (63-52)

The Montgomery Biscuits defeated the Birmingham Barons 1-0. Lucius Fox scored the only run on a RBI single by Nick Solak in the sixth inning. Brock Burke hasn’t been slowed down by his promotion to AA. He threw 7.2 scoreless innings allowing three hits while striking out seven and walking none.

SS Lucius Fox: 2-for-4, R
3B Michael Brosseau: 0-for-2, BB, HBP
DH Nick Solak: 1-for-3, RBI, HBP
RF Jesus Sanchez: 0-for-4, K

RHP Yoel Espinal (S, 6): 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 K, 2 BB

Port Charlotte Stone Crabs (61-50)

The Port Charlotte Stone Crabs defeated the Bradenton Marauders 3-2. Tristan Gray hit his 13th homer of the year. Brendan McKay collected two hits including a triple.

Prospect Note: Tristan Gray leads the Florida State League with 32 doubles just ahead of Josh Lowe (25) and Jesus Sanchez (24) to give the Stone Crabs the top three doubles hitters. His 13 homers is good for seventh most in the league. A .205 ISO in the FSL is no joke. His batting average is held back by his early season struggles and he’s not a big OBP, but his bat has some thunder and has played 2B/SS/3B.

2B Vidal Brujan: 0-for-4
DH Brendan McKay: 2-for-3, 3B (1), R
1B Robbie Tenerowicz: 0-for-2, RBI
3B Tristan Gray: 1-for-2, HR (13), 2 R, RBI, BB

Rookie Hudson Valley Renegades (31-20)

The Hudson Valley Renegades fell to the Tri-City ValleyCats 8-7. The Renegades sprinted out to a 4-1 lead through three and held a 7-6 lead through eight. The ValleyCats rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth for the walk-off victory. Chris Betts led the way offensive with three hits including a double.

Prospect Note: Chris Betts has had a difficult time being healthy enough to play. The Rays took Betts in the second round of the 2015 draft knowing he would need Tommy John Surgery and wouldn’t be able to make his professional debut until 2016. In 2016 he only managed 39 games and 145 plate appearances due to injuries. In 2017 he only made it through eight plate appearances before being shut down for the season. So two and half professional seasons only saw him make 153 plate appearances. This year he has been healthy and was able to get a small cameo in Bowling Green before short season ball started and has made 238 plate appearances this year. His development is behind where the Rays would like it, but being healthy this year has been progress. Betts is putting up a .275/.341/.503 line with 11 doubles, and eight homers in 153 AB for Hudson Valley.

DSL Rays 2 (34-23)

The DSL Rays 2 lost to the DSL Indians 6-1 in a game that was postponed on July 23. The Rays 2 offense couldn’t string together enough positive outcomes to score more than one run despite eight hits, four walks and three errors by the Indians defense.
