David Hess Scouting Report
Hess started out his major league career with a very nice string of outings. At one point, he allowed just two runs over three starts. However, he has hit a buzzsaw since then, with opponents catching onto his ways. He has a 10.50 ERA over his 7 outings (5 starts), even losing his spot in the rotation. Following the deadline, he was given the opportunity to start again, and struggled. On the 3rd against the Rangers in Texas, he allowed seven runs on six hits, while he walked one and struck out four over 3 1⁄3 innings pitched.
In 2018, he has relied primarily on his Fourseam Fastball (93mph) and Slider (80mph), also mixing in a Change (84mph). He also rarely throws a Curve (72mph).
His fourseam fastball has much less armside movement than typical, has essentially average velo, results in somewhat more flyballs compared to other pitchers’ fourseamers and has some added backspin. His slider comes in below hitting speed and has short glove-side cut. His change has surprising cut action. His curve comes in below hitting speed, results in more flyballs compared to other pitchers’ curves and has slight glove-side movement.
