Blake Snell has been among baseball’s best pitchers this season and is starting to receive recognition for it. In addition to whispers of Cy Young potential, he has also been named the American League’s Pitcher of the Month for August.
The 2018 season has been a breakout campaign for Blake Snell, as the former top prospect has overcome some early career struggles to be one of the league’s best pitchers over the past year. He becomes just the fourth pitcher in franchise history to be awarded the pitcher of the month honors, and first since Chris Archer in July of 2013.
Thus far in 2018, he has compiled a 17-5 record with a 2.02 ERA & 3.10 FIP over 26 starts and 151 2⁄3 innings pitched.
In August, Snell has been particularly dominant with no other starting pitcher in the American League coming close to matching his ERA. He put up a 1.04 ERA over five outings. Meanwhile, Snell also had the highest strikeout percentage among qualified starting pitchers over the course of the month as well.
As the season nears its conclusion, Blake Snell has emerged as a candidate for the Cy Young award. As of right now, he is certainly not the favorite, but if he keeps up his excellent performance, the race could start to look very interesting.
