DOTF 9/5: Rays lose ALCS

Princeton Rays fall to Elizabethton Twins in Appalachian League Championship Series. Nick Solak leads Montgomery in loss.

The (Princeton) Rays lost the ALCS (Appalachian League Championship Series) to the (Elizabethton) Twins.

Four teams started their opening playoff series. The Durham Bulls and Montgomery Biscuits lost while Bowling Green and Hudson Valley won.

Triple-A Durham Bulls (79-60)

The Durham Bulls lost to the Toledo Mud Hens 10-3. The game was similar to last night’s Rays loss to the Blue Jays. Durham fell behind 7-0 early and couldn’t put much of a dent in the deficit. Brandon Snyder and Mac James led the way with two hits and a double a piece. The Bulls are down 1-0 in a best of five series.

Double-A Montgomery Biscuits (79-61)

The Montgomery Biscuits fell to the Jackson Generals 4-3. Through five innings the Biscuits held a 3-1 lead. The Biscuits held a one run lead into the bottom of the ninth until the Generals responded with two runs for the walk-off victory. The Biscuits are down 1-0 in a best of five series. Nick Solak found his way on base four times with two singles and two walks. Solak also stole two bags.

The Port Charlotte Stone Crabs season has ended.

Class A Bowling Green Hot Rods (90-49)

The Bowling Green Hot Rods defeated the Lansing Lugnuts 4-3 in ten innings. The Lugnuts scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game at three. In the playoffs the minor leagues don’t play under the rules that places a runner at second to start each half inning. Ronaldo Hernandez drove in the game winning run in the top of the tenth. Tobias Myers allowed a solo homer as the only damage in five innings. Vidal Brujan picked up a hit and scored a run after returning to the Hot Rods for the playoff series. The Hot Rods lead the best of five series 1-0.

The Hudson Valley Renegades defeated the Auburn Doubledays 11-5. The Renegades offense converted 16 hits into 11 runs. Jonathan Aranda picked up four hits and was a homer shy of the cycle. The Renegades lead the best of five series 1-0.

The Princeton Rays fell to the Elizabethton Twins 2-1. Facing elimination the Rays took a 1-0 lead in the third. Elizabethton tied the game in the fourth and scored the game winning run in the bottom of the eighth. Grant Witherspoon collected two hits including a double. Shane Baz allowed one run in 5.2 innings of work and picked up seven strikeouts. The Princeton Rays have lost the ALCS (Appalachian League Championship Series).
