Rays prospects and winter leagues: Offseason activity Heats up

Once again, the Perth Heat in the Australian Baseball League feature a number of Rays.

The Rays have eight players in the Australian Baseball League this season, all of whom play for the Perth Heat except for Curtis Mead, who was acquired from the Phillies last week.

Hitters

C Roberto Alvarez, Australian Baseball League

This week: 8 AB, 4 H, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Offseason: 8 AB, .500/.556/.500

Alvarez is known more for his defense, but he did hit well for short-season Princeton in 2018. He had a .615 OPS for Class-A Bowling Green in 2019.

2B Jonathan Aranda, Liga Mexicana del Pacífico

Offseason: 9 AB, .222/.222/.222

Game logs for players not in the ABL were strangely unavailable Sunday. Hopefully that problem is fixed soon.

SS Wander Franco, Liga de Béisbol Profesional de la República Dominicana

OF Niko Hulsizer, ABL

Hulsizer was acquired from the Dodgers for Adam Kolarek, but he only had 34 at-bats for Class A-Advanced Charlotte after coming back from an injury.

IF Kaleo Johnson, ABL

Offseason: 12 AB, .333/.385/.667

Johnson — a 32nd-round pick — hit well with Bowling Green last season before struggling with Charlotte.

IF Curtis Mead, ABL

Offseason: 12 AB, .167/.167/.167

Mead was acquired from the Phillies last week for left-handed pitcher Cristopher Sanchez, who was promptly added to their 40-man roster. The Phillies signed Mead for $200,000, and his .813 OPS was 13th in the Gulf Coast League.

OF Jordan Qsar, ABL

Qsar was limited to 59 games in 2019, but he showed some power potential with nine homers and 20 extra-base hits.

RHP Blake Bivens, ABL

After pitching mostly in relief for the first time in his career last season, Bivens will pick up some extra innings in that role this winter.

RHP Carlos Garcia, ABL

In 21 Gulf Coast League innings, Garcia struck out 25 and had a 1.29 ERA, but he also walked 11.

RHP Audry Lugo, ABL

Offseason: 2 IP, 0.00 ERA, 0.00 WHIP

Lugo made his pro debut in 2019 and pitched at three levels, mostly in the GCL. There, he had 29 strikeouts, 10 walks, and a 2.59 ERA in 24 13 innings.
