According to the Tampa Bay Times, the Tampa Bay Rays will be placing 2B Joey Wendle onto the 10-day Injured List with a hamstring issue, suffered after Jake Marisnick slid through the tag on a stolen base attempt during Sunday’s afternoon contest with the Houston Astros.
The news comes just 24 hours after the Rays learned they will be without Matt Duffy for an extended period of time, thanks to his own injuries problems.
The Rays depth will be tested, but they are well suited to cover their holes on the infield. Wendle’s injury will allow Daniel Robertson, Brandon Lowe, and Yandy Diaz more time on the field, as well as Christian Arroyo, whom the team has promoted in the place of Wendle.
Wendle fell just short of making it onto the final three for the American League Rookie of the Year award in 2018, after hitting .300/.354/.435 while also displaying tremendous defense for the Rays en route to accruing 3.7 fWAR over 139 games played.
Arroyo came to the Rays as part of the return in the Evan Longoria trade. Arroyo dealt with his fair share of injury issues in 2018, including a concussion that he suffered towards the end of the season. He managed to play in 20 games for the Rays and hit .264/.339/.396.
