Rays prospects and minor leagues: Duffy homers as rehab continues

Matt Duffy had a big role in Charlotte’s offensive explosion Sunday.

Moises Gomez’s season line of a .232 average, .306 on-base percentage, and .406 slugging percentage doesn’t look too impressive, but it’s still significantly higher than league average. And with two more home runs Sunday, his line in May is very similar to his breakout 2018 season — .263/.313/.509. The 40.7% strikeout rate will have to come down though.

Triple-A Durham Bulls (25-17)

Durham couldn’t keep Rochester in the park in a 6-4 loss. The Red Wings hit four home runs, including one in the top of the seventh, a half inning after the Bulls scored three times to tie the game. In that inning, Mike Brosseau hit an RBI double, a run scored on a wild pitch, and Christian Arroyo tied the game with a single. Arturo Reyes struck out six and allowed three runs in five innings.

Double-A Montgomery Biscuits (28-15)

Montgomery edged Jacksonville, 3-2. Although he gave up nine hits in six innings, Sam McWilliams limited the Jumbo Shrimp to an earned run and also struck out five batters. In the third, the Biscuits struck first against star pitching prospect Sixto Sanchez when Jesus Sanchez and Tristan Gray had back-to-back RBI hits. In the fifth, Rene Pinto’s RBI single added an insurance run.

CF Josh Lowe: 2-for-5, 1 R, 1 K (.772)

Class A-Advanced Charlotte Stone Crabs (22-21)

Matt Duffy and three other Stone Crabs went deep in Charlotte’s 9-3 win over Clearwater. In addition to the rehabbing veteran, Moises Gomez homered twice, and Garrett Whitley and Jim Haley contributed dingers. As he has all season, Michael Plassmeyer pitched well, allowing just a run in five innings.

Class-A Bowling Green Hot Rods (24-19)

Bowling Green fell to Lake County in a 10-inning, 8-7 slugfest. The teams combined for six home runs, including the first of Beau Brundage’s professional career. Jake Palomaki’s two-run homer in the ninth gave the Hot Rods a 7-5 lead, but a Captains two-run shot forced extra innings. In the 10th, an error moved Lake County’s free runner to third, and he scored on a walk-off single. Easton McGee allowed four runs — three earned — in five innings.
