Rays prospects and minor leagues: Joe McCarthy hits first homer of the year

The Tampa Bay Rays enjoyed a 7-0 day as an organization. Joe McCarthy (Durham) hit his first homer of the season in his fifth game back from a back injury that occurred in spring training. The Stone Crabs rallied for a come from behind victory down six in the ninth with Ronaldo Hernandez coming through with the game winning hit. Caleb Sampen (Bowling Green) continued his solid season with 7.0 scoreless innings.

Triple-A Durham Bulls (37-26)

The Durham Bulls defeated the Charlotte Knights 7-3. The Bulls sprinted out to a 4-0 lead capped off by Joe McCarthy’s first homer of the season in the first. Mac James added a two run homer in the second to extend the lead to 6-0. In the eighth Jason Coats drove in the final run with a sacrifice fly.

Double-A Montgomery Biscuits (39-24)

The Montgomery Biscuits defeated the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp 9-4. The Biscuits scored first with an RBI double off the bat of Brett Sullivan and two run homer by Tristan Gray in the third inning to take a 3-0 lead. In the fourth the Biscuits extended their lead to 5-0 on a RBI triple by David Rodriguez and a RBI groundout by Jermaine Palacios. In the sixth Rodriguez recorded his second RBI triple of the game and was followed by a Palacios RBI single to extend the lead to 7-1. In the eighth Palacios reached on a fielding error that scored two runs to extend the lead to 9-4.

Class A-Advanced Charlotte Stone Crabs (33-30)

The Charlotte Stone Crabs came from behind for a 7-6 victory. The Stone Crabs were behind 6-0 midway through nine. Russ Olive plated the Stone Crabs first run on a RBI single. Jake Palomaki walked to score the second run ahead of a wild pitch that cut the lead in half. Taylor Walls hit a two run double to bring the score to 6-5 ahead of Jim Haley’s game tying RBI double. Ronaldo Hernandez came through with the walk-off single with two outs that got over the center fielder’s head.

The Hot Rods broke the scoreless tie in third with a 2-RBI single by Michael Smith and a RBI double by Kaleo Johnson to take a 3-0 lead. Roberto Alvarez added a solo homer in the seventh. Caleb Sampen continued his impressive season with 7.0 scoreless innings.

Dominican Summer League Rays 1 (4-4)

The DSL Rays 1 defeated the DSL Dodgers Bautista 5-4. The Rays 1 jumped out to an early lead with a 2-RBI double by Angel Lopez in the first. After the Dodgers Bautista cut the lead to 2-1 the Rays 1 added on a run in the fifth on a steal of third base by Ismael Aguilar that caused an errant throw allowing him to score. Bryan Santos and Isaias Sangrona added RBI singles in the sixth to extend the lead to 5-1. The Dodgers Bautista threatened, but came up short.

Dominican Summer League Rays 2 (3-5)

The DSL Rays 2 defeated the DSL Indians 5-4. The Rays 2 got on the board first with a Johan Lopez RBI single in the first. After the Indians tied it the Rays 2 took a 2-1 lead on a Duary Del Rosario RBI single. Lopez added a RBI double in the seventh to extend the lead to 3-1. The Indians took a 4-3 lead in the eighth. In the ninth the Rays 2 rallied with a sacrifice fly by Freddvil Chevez to tie the game at four. The Rays 2 walked it off in the tenth on a wild pitch.
