Rays prospects and minor leagues: Betts chosen for MWL Home Run Derby

Chris Betts will try to become the second straight Bowling Green catcher to win the Midwest League Home Run Derby.

On Monday, the Midwest League announced the eight participants for the Home Run Derby scheduled for June 17. After Ronaldo Hernandez won last season, Chris Betts will try to become the second straight Hot Rods catcher to come out on top. He’s third in the league with 11 home runs.

Triple-A Durham Bulls (38-26)

Durham hit three homers in a 5-4 win over Toledo. Nate Lowe’s two-run homer in the first gave the Bulls a 2-1 lead, and Jake Smolinski’s solo shot an inning later extended the lead to two runs. In the sixth, Brendan McKay hit his second home run for Durham. Arturo Reyes struck out six and only allowed a run in six innings.

Double-A Montgomery Biscuits (39-25)

Montgomery fell to Jacksonville, 6-5, in 11 innings. The Biscuits held leads of 3-0, 4-3, and 5-4 but were unable to put the Jumbo Shrimp away. After Montgomery couldn’t plate its free baserunner in the 11th, Jacksonville won the game with a walk-off single. Josh Fleming allowed three runs — two earned — in six innings.
