Rays prospects and minor leagues: Brendan McKay continues to impress

Brendan McKay (Durham) continues to impress on the mound after his promotion to AAA. Paul Campbell (Charlotte) threw 7.0 strong innings with eight strikeouts. Joe McCarthy (Charlotte) made his first appearance of the year after suffering a back injury during spring training.

Triple-A Durham Bulls (33-24)

The Durham Bulls defeated the Norfolk Tides 4-3. In the first Michael Brosseau gave the Bulls a 1-0 lead on a RBI groundout with the bases loaded. Andrew Velazquez extended the lead to 2-0 on his fourth homer of the year in the third. Brendan McKay was cruising until the fifth when he gave up his first run in the last five starts and only the second time this season he’s allowed more than one run in nine starts. Joey Rickard hit a two run homerun off McKay, because of course he did. In the sixth inning the Bulls regained the lead on a RBI triple by Jake Smolinski and RBI single by Dalton Kelly. Joey Rickard drove in his third run of the game with a groundout in the seventh.

Double-A Montgomery Biscuits (33-23)

The Montgomery Biscuits defeated the Tennessee Smokies 3-2. After falling behind 1-0 in the top half of the second inning the Biscuits scored three in the bottom of the frame to take a 3-1 lead. RBI doubles by Robbie Tenerowicz and Kevin Padlo along with a RBI single by Josh Lowe led to the Biscuits three runs. In the seventh the Smokies cut the lead to one, bu the Biscuits held on for the victory.

Class A-Advanced Charlotte Stone Crabs (30-27)

The Charlotte Stone Crabs defeated the Dunedin Blue Jays 3-1. Jim Haley gave the Stone Crabs a quick 1-0 lead with a RBI double in the first. Dunedin tied the game with a run in the third. Zach Rutherford and Taylor Walls added RBI singles in the seventh to give the Stone Crabs a 3-1 lead. Paul Campbell held the Blue Jays to one run in seven innings while striking out eight. Joe McCarthy made his first rehab appearance of the season.

Dominican Summer League Rays 1 (1-1)

The DSL Rays 1 fell to the DSL Athletics 8-5. RBI outs on balls in play by Estanli Castillo and Angel Lopez in the third inning tied the game at two. Castillo added a sacrifice fly in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead. A five run fifth was too much for the Rays 1 to overcome.

The DSL Rays 2 fell to the DSL Rangers 1 10-7. The Rays 2 sprinted out to a 5-0 lead through three innings. The Rangers 1 scored nine combined runs in the sixth and seven to take a lead that the Rays 2 couldn’t overcome.
