The Tampa Bay Rays are expected to make a number of moves over the next 24 hours. Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports that the Rays are placing right-handed pitcher Chaz Roe on the 10-day Injured List with a right flexor strain and will be activating right-handed pitcher Diego Castillo off of the Injured List.
The Rays have also placed left-handed pitcher Jose Alvarado on the Injured List with a right oblique strain that will sideline him for several weeks, if not longer.
A corresponding move as yet to be announced for the vacant roster spot.
Castillo rejoins the Rays, having last pitched for them on June 22nd, when we was placed on the IL with right shoulder inflammation. After a strong start to the season, Castillo’s performance suffered through the month of June. Overall this year, he has a 3.93 ERA / 4.54 FIP to go with a 25.9 K% / 10.9 BB% over 34 1⁄3 innings pitched.
It’s been a struggle for Chaz Roe this year, as he has failed to truly harness his slider that garnered national attention for him last season. His walk rate has more than doubled from last season, and his ERA has also spiked. Overall, he has a 5.27 ERA / 4.19 FIP to go along with a 28.4 K% / 15.8 BB% over 27 1⁄3 innings pitched.
In other injury news, Marc Topkin reports that Matt Duffy will be moved to Triple-A Durham to continue his rehab. He will play three games there and be reevaluated as his return to the big leagues draws near.
