Rays prospects and minor leagues: Anthony Banda makes third rehab appearance

Anthony Banda struck out two in a scoreless inning for Port Charlotte.

Anthony Banda made his third rehab appearance for Port Charlotte since having Tommy John surgery last summer. Vidal Brujan (Montgomery) picked up four hits and is hitting .435 since his promotion last week. The DSL Rays 2 put up 20 runs.

Triple-A Durham Bulls (51-34)

The Durham Bulls defeated the Charlotte Knights 3-2. Dalton Kelly put the Bulls on the board first with a solo homer in the third. In the sixth Charlotte tied the game at one before taking a 2-1 lead in the seventh. The Bulls quickly answered in the bottom of the frame with solo homers by Emilio Bonifacio and Jake Cronenworth. Ian Gibaut worked around two walks and single in a ninth to convert his fourth save of the season.

Double-A Montgomery Biscuits (51-33)

The Montgomery Biscuits defeated the Jackson Generals 4-2. The Biscuits didn’t waste any time getting on the board. Taylor Walls scored Vidal Brujan on a single. Josh Lowe followed with a RBI single to score Walls to take a 2-0 lead. The Generals answered with a single run in the bottom of the first. In the seventh the Miles Mastrobuoni scored on a passed ball to take a 3-1 lead. Brujan added an insurance run in the ninth on a RBI single. Brujan hasn’t slowed down since his promotion to AA last week with a four hit night upping his batting average to .435.

The Charlotte Stone Crabs defeated the St. Lucie Mets 2-1. Two errors and a RBI groundout led to a Stone Crabs run in the first. The Mets tied the game in the fourth. Ronaldo Hernandez homered in the bottom of the inning to take a 2-1 lead that held. Anthony Banda made his third rehab appearance since having Tommy John surgery last summer. He struck out two and allowed one hit in a scoreless 1.0 inning. Stephen Woods followed with 4.1 one run innings while striking out five.

The Bowling Green Hot Rods fell to the Dayton Dragons 4-2 to snap their eight game winning streak. Roberto Alvarez singled home a run to give the Hot Rods a first inning lead. In the seventh Kevin Santiago plated the Hot Rods second run with a sacrifice fly to cut the Dragons lead to 3-2.

Short Season Hudson Valley Renegades (8-11)

The Hudson Valley Renegades fell to the Brooklyn Cyclones 8-5. Hill Alexander’s RBI double and Jacson McGowan’s RBI groundout gave the Renegades an early 2-0 lead through one inning. In the second Carlos Vargas added a RBI double and Cristhian Pedroza extended the Renegades lead to 4-0 with a sacrifice fly. The Cyclones tied the game at four in the eighth inning. Alexander stole home as part of a double steal in the eighth to take a 5-4 lead. The Cyclones scored four in the top of the ninth that the Renegades couldn’t answer. Rodolfo threw 5.0 scoreless innings with four strikeouts.

Short Season Princeton Rays (7-8)

The Princeton Rays fell to the Burlington Royals 7-4. Princeton was the first on the board with a RBI double by Gionti Turner in the fourth. In the fifth the Rays added a run with a sacrifice fly off the bat of Angelo Armenta. The Royals tied the game at two in the bottom of the fifth. Diego Infante grounded into a double play that scored a run to take a 3-2 lead in the sixth. The Royals answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 4-3 lead. In the eighth the Rays tied the game at four on a fielding error. The Royals hit a three run homer in the eighth to secure the victory.

The GCL Rays defeated the GCL Orioles 2-1. It was the first lost of the season for the Orioles. The Orioles took a lead with a run in the third, but Julio Meza answered with a sacrifice fly in the fourth to tie the game. Saul Fortuna singled home the game winning run in the fifth. The game ended up being called due to rain in the sixth inning.

The DSL Rays 2 beat the DSL Indians/Brewers 20-4. The Rays 2 battered drew 13 walks, were hit by two pitches, and collected 13 hits. The Rays 2 sprinted out to a 12-0 lead through two innings and extended it to 16-0 through five.
