The Rays are embroiled in a three-way race for two American League Wild Card slots. For Rays fans, this means every day has the potential for joy or despair.

Between now and whenever the Wild Card teams are determined we’ll provide a daily update on the state of the race.

Tuesday, September 17

Standings: Rays are sitting in the second Wild Card spot, one game back of the Oakland Athletics and 1.5 games ahead of the Cleveland Indians.

Magic number: Any combination of 11 Rays wins/Indians losses will clinch a Wild Card berth for Tampa Bay.

Mood: Cautious optimism until we look at the projections for tonight’s games.

Latest scores: Rays and Indians had Monday off; the Athletics lost to the lowly Kansas City Royals, 6-5, when the usually dependable Liam Hendricks blew a save.

Today’s action (probable pitchers from MLB; gameday odds from 538):

Rays vs. LA Dodgers, Blake Snell vs. Ross Stripling. Odds: Rays have 45% chance of winning

Athletics vs. KC Royals, Brett Anderson vs Jorge Lopez. Odds: Athletics have 72% chance of winning.

Indians vs Detroit Tigers, Adam Plutko vs. TDB. Cleveland has a 71% chance of winning.
