This week DRaysBay concluded our Top-50 prospect coverage, which averaged the appraisal of five members of our masthead into a master list, with profiles provided by JT Morgan and myself. You can find those write-ups here:

Prior to that list’s debut, the Community here at DRaysBay voted throughout the offseason to determine our own Top-40, with individual player voting for the top thirty names, as managed annually by Scott Grauer. You can find the results of that list here:

One interesting exercise each offseason is to see where the Community and Masthead differed in our rankings for the Rays farm system. Below is a comparison of the two lists:

  • The Community and the Masthead were in alignment on which prospects encompassed the top 11 names, but there were significant placement differences for two top-names tied to injury concerns: CF Josh Lowe (No. 5 for Community vs. 11 for Masthead) and RHP Brent Honeywell Jr. (11 vs 7)
  • There was further consensus between the two lists for the top-16 names in the Rays farm system, and among the Top-25 the biggest variations are in the Top-40 Players more highly valued by the Masthead: RHP Peter Fairbanks (No. 22 vs 30) and RHP Seth Johnson (17 vs 24).
  • Top-40 Players more significantly valued by the Community are outside the Top-25: LHP Josh Fleming (No. 26 vs 37 ) and LHP Michael Plassmeyer (29 vs 36)
  • Players ranked in the Top-40 by the Community, but not by the Masthead: RHP Sandy Gaston (35), UTIL Brett Sullivan (37), RHP Joel Peguero (38), INF Ford Proctor (40)
  • Players ranked in the Top-40 by the Masthead, but not the Community: RHP/CF Tanner Dodson (No. 30 - Tommy John Surgery), INF Curtis Mead (33), RHP Caleb Sampen (39), INF Tyler Frank (40)
  • Outside the top three names, there was identical placement for the prospects ranked 10 (Hernandez), 12 (Jones), 13 (Ryan), 16 (Goss), 23 (Doxakis), and 32 (Strotman), in case you needed lotto numbers.
