With the No. 96 pick in the draft, the Rays selected right-handed pitcher Hunter Barnhart from St. Joseph’s High School in California.
According to ESPN analyst David Schoenfield, the 10 high school pitchers selected through the first two rounds were the second fewest in draft history. The Rays chose two among their first four picks.
Barnhart is ranked No. 62 at Baseball America ($), No. 135 at MLB.com, No. 92 at FanGraphs, and No. 75 at ESPN ($).
Prior to the abbreviated season, the righty was known for his control, but this spring, his stuff across the board improved. His velocity was up to the lower 90s, and his curveball was better.
The two-sport star is committed to Arizona State.
