Tampa Bay Rays News and Links: Looking on the Bright Side

Glasnow’s slider, Padlo debuts, and a phenom in Detroit

MLB: Tampa Bay Rays at Boston Red Sox Brian Fluharty-USA TODAY Sports

The Rays lost to the Red Sox last night to fall below .500. While it was an ugly, sloppy game, Tyler Glasnow once again turned in a solid outing, frequently flashing his new slider. Travis Sawchik from The Score on Glasnow’s new weapon.

The Rays kept their Kevins in balance as they sorted out how to handle KK’s quad injury. They placed Kiermaier on the 10-day IL and called up Kevin Padlo.

Topper on the newest Ray:

The Rays also claimed catcher Deivy Grullon from the Reds and moved Chaz Roe to the 60-day IL.

Adam Berry of mlb dot com on Randy’s sensational work with the glove on Monday. (We’re not gonna talk about what he did last night.)

This was fun:

Angel Hernandez was extra Angel Hernandez-y yesterday.

It’s official. Colorado will host this year’s All Star Game.

Evan Drellich and Ken Rosenthal at the Athletic have more on Manfred’s decision to pull the game from Atlanta.

Kevin Goldstein at Fangraphs with a fun piece on fastball shape.

The Mets outdid themselves in undermining Jake deGrom on Monday. The Mets ace threw six shutout innings, and even collected a couple hits and an RBI in support of his own cause. But the pen blew it up in the eighth, allowing five runs and leading to a 5-3 loss to the Phillies. And sure, yes yes, I know I know, pitcher wins are a dumb stat, yada yada, etc., etc. But look at this:

Meanwhile, old friend Matt Moore looked electric the first time through the order. After that, not so much, but still! It’s a better universe when Matt Moore is dealing in it.

Angels fans letting the Astros know they haven’t forgotten. But where does one get an inflatable trash can?

I’m generally against throwing the ball back, but this is an exception.

There’s a new star in Detroit by the name of Akil Baddoo. He’s a Rule 5 pick from the Twins, and he’s making the jump from A ball to, well, doing stuff like this in The Show:

How can you not be romantic about baseball.

Bally Sports spellchecker is still working out the kinks.

In COVID news, the Nats — who had their opening series against the Mets cancelled as well as the first game of their Braves tilt — made a slew of roster moves before Tuesday’s game. Which ... well, that’s never good.

Fernando Tatis is also on the IL after injuring himself on a swing and a miss.

Trent Rosecrans on Nick Castellanos’ tone deaf suspension.

Boston is getting a specialty uniform in the new City Connect series. And while the scheme looks kinda Raysie, the color and design is actually a nod to the Boston Marathon. It will be worn on Patriot Day.

Old friend Mike Montgomery is going to the Yankees.

Also going to the Yankees is Rougned Odor, who was DFA’d by the Rangers last week.

Finally, some floof for a pallet cleanse.
