City Council Moves Rays Proposal Forward by 7-1 Vote

12

The St. Petersburg City Council has moved the Rays proposal to build a new $450 million waterfront stadium on the site of Al Lang Field forward with a 7-1 vote. The only council member to vote 'No' was Herb Polson. The vote was the first of three the council must cast to place the proposal on the November ballot. The next vote is scheduled for July 17th. I'll post more stadium news a bit later on.

They didn't even bother voting on it. Councilman Wengay Newton supposedly called Nurse a "mole" for PoWW.

High Cost for Posey May Lead Rays to Draft Beckham

23
Baseball Prospectus' Kevin Goldstein reports that the Rays are leaning towards drafting Georgia HS SS Tim Beckham at this hour. The reason? Multiple sources are reporting that FSU C Buster Posey's agent is seeking a bonus of $12 million for his client, and that's sending the Rays ducking for cover. Goldstein speculates that in an already-close debate on who to draft, this may prove to be the clincher, unless Posey's bonus demands drop downward before draft hour.

Anyone hear of Jesse Darcy, a SP out of Class A Columbus? Holy crap, this guy is pitching lights out ball right now. His line from his last start is 6IP giving 0 runs and yielding just 3 hits while sriking out 7. For the year, he is posting a 2.05 ERA with 42 K and just 5 walks in 48 IP. Jesse was a 38th round pick out of Manhattan College in 2007.

Site Notes

+

Just a couple of quick, site-related reminders for tomorrow. Firstly, as you all know, the MLB Draft starts at 2pm and the Rays have the No. 1 overall pick. ESPN2 will televise the first five rounds starting at that time, and coverage will continue through about six o'clock. DRB has draft day covered. We will open up a Draft Day thread at noon, and we will update as needed from there. On another note, tomorrow evening's Rays-Red Sox game will start an hour early, at 6:05, due to Game 1 of the NBA Finals between the Celtics and Lakers taking place at 9pm in the TD Banknorth Garden. Our Gameday Thread for that affair will open up at 4:30pm. Between the game and the draft, baseball should be on unabated all afternoon and evening, and we look forward to being your home for it.

Baseball Prospectus Mock Draft

It's subscription only, but here's what they say about the Rays pick: "1. Tampa Bay Rays This is not like last year, when the Rays had the first overall pick and everyone knew for months that the team would select Vanderbilt left-hander David Price. This is more like 2003, when Tampa had the first overall pick and waited until literally minutes before the draft to choose Delmon Young over Rickie Weeks. This time around, the choice is between Florida State catcher Buster Posey and Georgia high school shortstop Tim Beckham (with Vanderbilt’s Pedro Alvarez still in the mix, but a long shot), but the circumstances are much different for the now-contending Rays. Posey is the safer pick, a player who could make it to The Show quickly while providing nearly Gold Glove-level defense and contributing at the plate by hitting .280-plus with 15-20 home runs and 70 walks. That’s an All-Star at the position, and more importantly, he’d be ready to help over the next few years, when the rest of Tampa’s embarrassing amount of talent is lined up to make a long-term run. Selection: Buster Posey, C, Florida State" I take issue with this assertion. I think it is a reason to take Beckham. He would provide a new spark in 4 or 5 years when we have to start considering who to retain and who to let go. We could consider trading away players approaching free agency to get back players that will compete once this team would be built around Beckham.
